Stressed

An art installation that expresses the emotion of stress

The work

Intro

Stress is the most common emotion I’ve experienced in my college life. Almost every day, when there is a deadline or important project due, I experience a tremendous amount of stress and sometimes panic. Stress makes me feel weak and negative, and it eliminates the peace within. I want to express stress through extremes to represent when I’m in panic mode.

Inspiration

The inspiration comes from the tarot card “the three of sword”. I feel related cause when there is high amount of stress in my body. My heart would beating so fast that I would literally feel a sword piercing through my heart when there is an excessive amount of stress. So I was thinking creating a reverse similar-to-star shaped hexagon to makes the thing effective.

I was also thinking of using a white color to represent peace, a flashing red to represent a fast heartbeat, and a blue-red siren scene to push the anxiety to the extreme, just like the cops chase after you.

But for the updated project, in order to make the emotion more intense, I borrowed the element from the other two stressing tarot cards, the sword of 10 and the tower. They all represent a tremendous amount of stress. Bothering stress. Stress that keeps you awake at night. Stress that you feel when falling from a high place. The element enable me to come up with amazing ideas.

The Cutting

Everything seems to be alright when I activate the cutting machine. However, when the task was half finished, the machine stopped working due to some error code. And I looked at the work finished, thinking to myself, it might be a great idea if I can use those pieces to represent a shattered heart. So I just did it.
